Hunting Trip

Healthy eating in the winter months presents somewhat of a challenge.  The lack of fresh and affordable produce, the lack of inspiration and motivation are all together a very unproductive combination.  Grocery shopping trips usually end up with being so frustrated that the plans to make good and healthy food almost always amount to nothing.  However, the sun is shining today and it is March already, which "potentially" means that there is an end in sight to this epic winter.  The mission for the month of March is to create healthy meals on a daily basis, avoid buying food outside of the house and get into cooking again.  Cooking should be a pleasure and not a chore, as it can sometimes be anything but a pleasant activity.

This lover of the gunslinger burritos is also vegetarian. Has been vegetarian since 2000.  A long 11 years  In the few recent months, there has been a realization of a connection between migraine headaches and soy consumption.  The idea of substituting meat with something that is essentially so processed  that it ends up looking like meat is very twisted from the very beginning.  Perhaps, the idea is to substitute the protein lost by not consuming meat, but on another level, it makes little sense to mimic an animal product in the vegetarian diet.

The decision to cut this out from the diet was not a difficult one. The disappearance of migraine headaches would be a fantastic side-effect.

So, now the grocery list changes a bit.  There is no more flocking to the "oooh, it's just like meat, but without the guilt" section of the store.  There are many other healthy vegetarian choices available and experimenting with new food items should be a very interesting task.

Therefore, with no tears in the eyes - goodbye Tofurkey,
you won't be missed.

Off to hunt for some vegetables.

  1. Farmer's Markets rock for veggies! I miss living in London for that reason alone! Have you tried Tempeh?? I also love Sheppard's Pie made from mixed Lentils instead of beef :)
